The methodical expertise can also be referred to as methodical competency or methodological competency. It is actually an expression which appears to be more common in Germany than internationally.

Below you  can find a translated definition of the German "Methodenkompetenz":

"The ability to adequately use techniques and methods when organizing and planning a learning or working process in order to achieve predefined targets. The methodological competency also includes the ability to efficiently implement this approach to varying working or learning scenarios."

In other words, this competency summarizes the skills that you require in order to efficiently perform in your work or education environment. The two main categories of the methodological competency are the organization of your work and the time management. When given a task, you should be able to know how you can fulfil this task. Preferably in more than one way. You then have to choose which way/approach you'll take, based on its estimated efficiency. When following through with this approach, you have to constantly evaluate your process. Will you achieve high-quality results in a timely manner? Do you have to change your approach to an alternative?

Common characteristics of "methodical expertise":

  • Prioritization
  • Scheduling
  • Ability to solve problems
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to define and recognize targets
  • Ability to structure complex situations
  • Ability to find alternatives
  • Attitude towards lifelong learning
  • Evaluation skills
